A while ago, I had heard that the progressive UK rock group “Asia” was coming to my town and I could not wait to see them in action. I had my finger on the button and I was ready to arm the ADT security and launch into the car when I realized that the group, this “Asia,” was not the group I was looking for – they were not Original Asia. When I say Original Asia I am referring to the original for members who started the group – Geoff Downes, John Wetton, Steve Howe and Carl Palmer.

While there was fundamentally nothing wrong with what some called the “Payne Era” of Asia, it just was not for me and I began frantically searching for what ever happened to Original Asia. It didn’t take me long to realize that the boys were back – Original Asia had reformed and they were coming together on a CD, DVD and world tour. Their reunion tour continued on into 2007 and in mid-2007 the bad officially got back into the studio and began recording albums. What ever happened to Original Asia? Nothing. It seems that they just took a little break – long enough for them to remember why they started the band in the first place.

To most people, bands usually are polluted by internal strife such as popularity, direction and ego. However on the inside, most bands do not suffer from these ordeals. Instead most bands are kept together by many factors that are undeniably true. These factors are what enable a band to last the test of time even after the members have gone their separate ways. Here is a listing of the many factors that keeps a band together for a long period of time.

First of all, the band becomes like a family. Whenever one is suffering a personal ordeal outside of the band or enduring an addiction, the other members usually will help out their fallen band mate. No matter what the problem may be, the other members will reach out and help out. Another factor is how devoted the band is to the are of music. Regardless of what the big music producers may believe or feel, the band sticks together because of their devotion to the music and the fans. To the band it is not about the money, it is about the music and the people who love their music. Lastly, what keeps a band together is the fact they aspire for something greater and the only way to reach that is if they stay together.

Playing in a band can be exciting, fun, and rewarding but many people don’t realize the hard work required to balance everyone’s sense of importance within the band. I’m talking about the band members’ egos. Before playing on stage, everyone must feel that their opinions are important and incorporated into the band’s performance. This is often times a difficult task because every band member will each have a different opinion and everyone wants their ideas to be heard. Not being able to see eye to eye has been the critical, determining factor in most bands’ breakups.

One good way to make sure that everybody’s opinion matters is ask questions. Gather everyone’s opinion about how the song should be structured and incorporate their ideas thoughtfully. The band should not be treated as a dictatorship, being ruled by only one person. Instead, everyone’s ideas should be carefully examined and explored to ensure that everyone’s ego is being fulfilled and satisfied. A band needs to be a cohesive unit that is all on the same page and working towards a common goal. By simply asking questions and respecting other members’ opinions, a band can overcome most internal conflicts, unify, and satisfy all egos.

Selecting your band memebers is one of the most difficult parts of forming a good band. You must choose the best person you can find with the right talents for that a instrument that will be used in your band’s performances. Sometimes going to your local concert to see solo guitarists or vocalists can be a good idea because you are able to watch a person show their musical talents that you may like to see perform in your band. Each instrument is important to your band so you must choose a person that is able to play that musical position to the bes of their abilities. A vocalist is one of the most important aspects of a good band. If you have a good vocalist and decent background musical talents then your band will go far. You can also look for band members by asking your close buddies that may play the instrument that you are looking for. Sometimes the best band members are your friends or a buddy of yours that went to the same high school as you. Before picking your band member, you must host a try out beforehand to see if their person’s talents fit your band’s needs.

Many times in a band it’s easy to feel a sense of success after a good gig. While it is okay to feel happy after a good performance, a band should not measure their success by this. This is one of the pitfalls that must be avoided if a band is to remain successful after a good show.

If the band leader has had his/her ego stroked by a good, responsive audience at a recent show, that member may feel entitled to be lazy and not focus their energies on acquiring new shows. Subsequently, a long string of having no shows can have a negative effect on band morale, making the band feel unimportant or uninterested in the process. Members may begin missing practices altogether and may opt out of the band entirely. If a band produces a successful first album, the entire band may let the success go to their heads and the albums that follow may suffer a loss of creativity.

In order to avoid the pitfalls of early successes, a band must remember to keep their heads on straight and keep their eyes on the prize. A band is never truly successful unless they can accomplish this. The information doesn’t stop now.
